     Staff accountant is the typical entry level of accounting professional hired by the firm.  As a staff accountant, you will work under direct supervision and be involved in performing basic audit, review, and compilation procedures, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and other management consulting services. You may also be asked to assist with report preparation, or any other office duties as may be required.  Job assignments and responsibilities will become more demanding as you grow in knowledge and experience.  You will have frequent direct contact and interaction with client personnel at different levels. 

     As a senior accountant, you will work under the general direction of a partner, manager or supervisor.  Your main responsibilities include assistance in the preliminary planning of audit work, review of assistants’ work, and preparation of reports.  You will be performing audit procedures in more complex, highly technical areas than you did as a staff accountant.  You may be in charge of certain smaller engagements, and as such, you will have the responsibility of ensuring that the engagement is completed within the established time budget.  In this position, you will have frequent direct contact and interaction with client personnel at higher levels than you did as a staff accountant.

     As a supervisor, you will be the in-charge accountant working under the general direction of a partner or manager.  You will typically be responsible for more and larger engagements.  You will be responsible for preliminary audit planning, fieldwork and reporting.  You will be expected to handle increasingly difficult and complex client issues.  You will have primary responsibility for all aspects of certain engagements, including client contact, establishing time budgets and overall administration of the engagement.  

     If you have reached the level of manager with the firm, you will have already demonstrated the ability to attain the necessary technical and managerial skills.  As a manager, you will have nearly full responsibility for certain client engagements, with some minimal partner assistance, including oversight of the client contact and professional services provided.  You will be assigned to assist one or more supervisors and/or senior accountants with the timely completion of those engagements.

     A senior manager in the firm is essentially an intermediate step to becoming a partner.  It gives both you and the partners an opportunity to evaluate your ability to take the last step.  As a senior manager, you will perform the duties of a partner, such as signing reports of selected engagements and making final decisions regarding client issues.  You will have already developed a practice niche in your own area of expertise, and have become the firm expert in matters related to that area.

     Partners are the owners of the firm.  Partners have a vested financial interest in the long-term growth and success of the firm.  The responsibilities of a partner vary widely, depending upon each partner’s individual client base.  Although each partner specializes in certain areas of practice, each partner also shares a common goal of firm growth.  As a partner in the firm, you have the ability to earn a lucrative income, as well as earn additional long-term growth on your investment, depending upon your client base.
